The MN READ Act (MN Statute 120B.12.4a) states that a district must adopt a Local Literacy Plan. The purpose of this plan is to support every child reading at or above grade level every year, beginning in kindergarten, and to support multilingual learners and students receiving special education services in achieving their individual reading goals in order to meet grade level proficiency.
As part of this commitment, Watertown-Mayer Public Schools District 111 continues to maintain and update its Local Literacy Plan in accordance with the guidelines and templates provided by the Minnesota Department of Education, ensuring full compliance with the READ Act’s statewide standards.
Recognizing literacy's pivotal role in a student's success, the District continually enhances instructional practices to foster strong literacy skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The approach used in Watertown-Mayer Schools emphasizes systematic, sequential, and explicit instruction that fosters oral language development, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension for all students. Our curriculum aligns with Minnesota Academic Standards to build strong foundational skills from the start. We support this by providing our teachers with ongoing professional learning in evidence-based literacy practices.
